The Feast of Trumpets (Leviticus 23:23-25Numbers 29:1-6) was on the first day of Tishri.

After the exile, it became the New Year's Day (Rosh Hashanna) of the civil year.

But the start of the religious year is the first of Nisan (Passover).

On this day, a ram horn's horn, or shofar, called the people to prepare for the Day of Atonement.

No work was allowed on this day and the people gathered at the Tabernacle.

The 10 days from Trumpets to the Day of Atonement were known as "the days of awe" in modern Judaism.

During this 10 days the people searched their hearts and examined their lives.

The sounding of the shofar was a wake-up blast - a reminder that the time was near for the Day of Atonement.
